KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee will play in the Outback Bowl on New Year's Day against Penn State, the bowl announced Sunday.
The No. 17 Volunteers (9-3, 5-3 Southeastern Conference) are headed to Tampa, Fla., for the first time since the end of the
1992 season when they beat Boston College in what was then known as the Hall of Fame Bowl.
Last year the Vols sat at home during the holidays after finishing 5-6.
Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton had said he believed the Vols would go to the Capital One Bowl if Florida beat Arkansas
in the SEC championship game Saturday night. Florida won 38-28.
A win by Arkansas, Hamilton said, would likely put Tennessee in the Outback Bowl. Those scenarios depended on the SEC getting
two teams in the BCS.
Earlier Sunday, Arkansas accepted a bid to the Capital One in Orlando on Jan. 1.
